# Math and science review games for the whole class on one screen

> Run math and science review games on one screen: multiple choice, true/false and open questions, question lines to paste, and which games suit which review.

Review games are not just for vocabulary. A times tables drill, a unit on the states of matter or the planets of the Solar System can all become a team game on the projector, with the same energy as an English lesson and no student devices.

Oly started as a tool for English teachers, but it also has a **subject quiz mode** for math, science, history and geography, reading and writing, and any other subject. This post shows how to make a math or science review game, how to write questions that work on a shared screen, and which of the games suit which kind of review.

## Three kinds of questions

A subject set in Oly holds three kinds of questions:

| Kind | Example | How the class answers |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 7 × 8 = ? (54, 56, 63, 48) | Say the answer, or tap it on a touch screen |
| True / false | Water boils at 100 °C at sea level. | Thumbs up or down, or a card |
| Open | Why do we see lightning before we hear thunder? | Out loud or on a mini whiteboard; you judge it |

You see the answer on your phone before the class does, so you can check an open answer and tap **Correct** or **Not yet** without giving anything away.

## Three ways to make the set

### 1. Paste your own questions

The fastest way if you already have questions from a worksheet or last year's test. Choose the subject (Math, Science, History & geography, Reading & writing or Other) and paste one question per line:

- `7 × 8 | 56 | 54, 63, 48`
- `1/2 + 1/4 | 3/4 | 2/6, 1/8, 2/4`
- `Water boils at 100 °C at sea level | true`
- `The Sun is a planet | false`
- `What do plants need to make food? | Sunlight | Sand, Salt, Snow`
- `Why do we see lightning before we hear thunder? | Light travels faster than sound`

The shape is `question | answer | wrong, wrong, wrong`. A line whose answer is `true` or `false` becomes a true/false question. A short answer with no wrong answers becomes multiple choice, with other answers from the set as the wrong options; a long answer with none becomes an open question. Rows copied from Excel or Google Sheets work too, and so do questions in the "1. Question / A) B) C) / Answer: B" shape that ChatGPT writes.

Your own lines don't use the AI, so they don't count toward the free plan's 10 AI sets a month.

### 2. Snap the page or type a topic

Snap the textbook page you're reviewing, or type a topic like "fractions" or "the water cycle", and Oly writes a mix of multiple choice, true/false and open questions in your class's language. You can check and change every question before you play. Try it with a link that fills in the form: [math, grade 3](https://olyclass.com/create?subject=math&grade=3).

### 3. Start from the library

The [library](https://olyclass.com/library/) has ready sets by subject and grade, each in English and Vietnamese. A few for review season:

- Math: [Times tables 2, 5 and 10](https://olyclass.com/library/math-g2-times-2-5-10-en/), [Fractions](https://olyclass.com/library/math-g4-fractions-en/), [Decimals](https://olyclass.com/library/math-g5-decimals-en/), [Linear equations](https://olyclass.com/library/math-g7-equations-en/)
- Science: [Plants](https://olyclass.com/library/science-g3-plants-en/), [Solids, liquids and gases](https://olyclass.com/library/science-g4-states-of-matter-en/), [The Solar System](https://olyclass.com/library/science-g5-solar-system-en/), [Electricity](https://olyclass.com/library/science-g8-electricity-en/)

Open one, press **Play now**, or **Copy and edit** to make it fit your test.

## Which game for which review

21 of Oly's 27 games work with any subject (the other six are made for English practice). They all play the same set, so pick by what you want from the review.

| Goal | Game | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Check every student | [Ring the Bell](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/ring-the-bell/) | Every team writes every answer on a mini whiteboard; a miss costs a heart |
| Lots of questions, fast | [Tile Grab](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/tile-grab/) | Short turns, mystery boxes keep scores close |
| Keep every team listening | [Team Bingo](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/team-bingo/) | Each answer stamps every card that has it; best with short answers like numbers |
| Mixed difficulty | [Dare Board](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/dare-board/) | Teams pick a 1 to 5 tile; harder tiles bring harder questions |
| A bit of strategy | [Line of Four](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/line-of-four/) | A right answer drops a disc; four in a row is +5 |
| A nervous class | [High Water](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/high-water/) | The whole class builds one tower while the sea rises, and wins or loses together |
| Pairs of facts | [Memory Match](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/memory-match/) | In a subject set, a short question and its answer make a pair |
| Risk and reward | [Prize Climb](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/prize-climb/) | Climb on or bank your points, with three lifelines per team |

### Math: Ring the Bell and Team Bingo

Math answers are short and exact, which makes them perfect for mini whiteboards. In Ring the Bell, every team works out each problem at the same time and holds up its board; you see straight away which teams can do it. Team Bingo works well too: the cards hold answers like 56, 3/4 or 12, and every question might stamp any team's card.

For mental arithmetic, add a timer of 10 or 20 seconds per question. For multi-step problems, 60 seconds, or no timer at all.

### Science: true/false and open questions

Science units are full of misconceptions, and true/false questions bring them out: "Heavier objects always fall faster", "Plants get their food from the soil". Mix those with a few open "why" questions. In [Tile Grab](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/tile-grab/) or [Dare Board](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/dare-board/), the team answers out loud, and you decide whether the explanation is good enough. Ask the other teams "Do you agree?" before you tap.

## Make the review count

- **Double or triple questions.** Tap the points on a key question in the editor to make it ×2 or ×3. The big screen shows the badge, and the points won are multiplied. Use it for the two or three things certain to be on the test.
- **Steal.** Switch it on, and after a wrong answer another team can answer the same question. Every team has a reason to work out every problem.
- **Rotate who answers.** Paste your class list on the Ready page, and Oly calls one student per question. Teammates can help in whispers.
- **Review missed questions.** At the end, the summary lists the questions the class missed, and its review button makes a new game from just those, for now or the next lesson.

## The class's language

Subject sets play in the class's language. Pick it when you make the set: the questions and the text on the big screen ("Team 2, your turn!", "Time's up!") appear in that language, so a science class taught in Spanish or Vietnamese plays in Spanish or Vietnamese. Your own screens stay in the language you chose for Oly.

## A 20-minute math or science review

1. **Warm-up, 3 minutes.** Three true/false questions, thumbs up or down, no points.
2. **Main game, 12 minutes.** Ring the Bell or Tile Grab with 12 to 15 questions, a 20 to 30 second timer and steal on.
3. **Second chance, 5 minutes.** Review missed questions in a different game, like Team Bingo.

No student devices, nothing to install, and the whole class answers every question. For more, see [classroom games without student devices](https://olyclass.com/no-device-classroom-games/) or a [Jeopardy-style review game](https://olyclass.com/jeopardy-style-review-game/).
