Thanksgiving in the United States falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026 (Canada celebrates in October). For an English class, it is a gift of a topic: food words, family words, autumn words, and one of the most useful phrases in the language, "I'm thankful for…".

This post gives you a ready vocabulary set, games to practise it on one screen with the whole class, speaking activities about being thankful, and a 40-minute lesson plan. It works for students in the US, and just as well for learners anywhere who want to know what the holiday is about.

## The words

The library has a ready [Thanksgiving set](https://olyclass.com/library/en-a1-thanksgiving-words/) at A1, with 16 words:

| Food | People and places | Ideas and actions |
|---|---|---|
| turkey, pumpkin pie, corn, potato, food, dinner | family, friend, table, home | thank you, grateful, share, harvest, autumn, leaf |

Each word has a picture, pronunciation and an example sentence. There is also a [printable page](https://olyclass.com/library/en-a1-thanksgiving-words/print/) with flashcards, a worksheet and the answers.

For older or stronger students, [make your own set](https://olyclass.com/create?topic=Thanksgiving&level=A2) at A2 or B1, and add words like *gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, parade, feast, leftovers, appreciate*.

## Key phrases to teach

- I'm thankful for my family / my friends / my teacher.
- I'm grateful for…
- Can you pass the potatoes, please?
- What do you eat at Thanksgiving? We eat…
- Thank you for… (helping me / being my friend)

## Six vocabulary games on one screen

These play on a projector, TV or interactive display, in teams, with no student devices. You run them from your phone, which shows the answer before the class sees it. Each one uses the same set, so the words come back in different ways.

### 1. Team Bingo

In [Team Bingo](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/team-bingo/), every team gets a 3×3 card built from the set, and each question stamps every card that has the answer. Three in a row is BINGO, +5. It's a great first game, because every team listens to every question, not just its own.

### 2. Memory Match

[Memory Match](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/memory-match/) turns the words into pairs of cards: *turkey* and a picture of a turkey, *corn* and a picture of corn. A right answer earns two flips, and a pair is worth 2. Quiet and focused, good after a busy start.

### 3. Mystery Picture

In [Mystery Picture](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/mystery-picture/), a picture hides under numbered pieces. Each right answer takes one off, and the first team to name the picture wins a bonus. "Is it a pie? A pumpkin?" Students guess in English, which is half the fun.

### 4. Listen and Touch

For younger learners, [Listen and Touch](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/listen-and-touch/) practises listening: Oly says a word, and one student from each team races to touch the right picture on the screen.

### 5. Picture Dice: thankful sentences

After a right answer in [Picture Dice](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/picture-dice/), the team rolls three picture dice from the set and makes a sentence or a little story with them. *Family, table, pumpkin pie*: "My family sits at the table and eats pumpkin pie." You tap how many pictures they used, with a bonus for all three.

### 6. Hot Seat

One student sits with their back to the screen, and the team describes the word without saying it: "It's a big bird. People eat it in November." In [Hot Seat](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/hot-seat/) each round is 60 seconds, and you tap **Got it** or **Pass** on your phone. Best once the class knows the words.

## Offline activities about being thankful

### Gratitude chain

Each student writes "I'm thankful for…" on a strip of paper, and you link the strips into a paper chain across the classroom. Read a few aloud. Older students can write two sentences with a reason: "…because she always helps me."

### Pass the potatoes

A short role-play at a pretend dinner table. Put picture cards (or real objects) in the middle. Students ask politely: "Can you pass the corn, please?" "Here you are." "Thank you!" A natural way to practise requests and politeness.

### Thank-you card

Each student writes a short thank-you card to someone at school: a cleaner, a librarian, a classmate. Give a frame: "Dear…, Thank you for… You are… From…". Deliver them, if you can. It's the most memorable activity of the week for many students.

### Harvest sort

Write *harvest* foods on cards (corn, potato, pumpkin, apple) and other words (turkey, pie, table, leaf). Teams sort them into groups they choose and explain their groups: "These grow in the ground. These are on the table."

## A 40-minute Thanksgiving lesson

| Time | Activity | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 5 min | Show the pictures; say and repeat the words | Meet the words |
| 12 min | Team Bingo or Mystery Picture with the set | Recognise the words |
| 8 min | Pass the potatoes role-play in pairs | Polite requests |
| 10 min | Picture Dice: thankful sentences | Speaking |
| 5 min | Gratitude chain: one strip each | Writing |

At the end of the game, the summary shows the words the class missed. Note them for the warm-up next week, or press the review button to play them again straight away.

## Tips

- **Not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving.** Present it as a holiday some English speakers celebrate, and let students compare it with a harvest or family festival in their own country. "In my country, we…" is a great sentence to practise.
- **Keep the food friendly.** Some students don't eat certain foods; the set and games are about naming things, not what anyone should eat.
- **Set the effects to calm** on the Ready page if the class is excited before the long weekend.
- **Rotate who answers.** Paste your class list on the Ready page so Oly calls a different student each question.
