Ask "Would you rather eat pizza every day or ice cream every day?" and thirty hands go up. **Would you rather questions for kids** are one of the easiest ways to get a whole English class talking, because every student already has an answer.

Below are 30 kind, funny would you rather questions sorted by theme, sentence frames from Pre-A1 to B1, ways to run it, and a free tool that puts the questions on your class screen with a picture for each choice: [Would you rather on Oly](https://olyclass.com/classroom-tools/would-you-rather/).

## Why would you rather works for speaking

- **Everyone has an opinion.** There is no right answer, so shy and weaker students join in as easily as the strongest.
- **The risk is low.** Choosing a side takes one second and no English. The English comes after, when students say why, and by then they care.
- **It repeats one useful pattern.** "I would rather… because…" is real English students will use outside class.
- **It is a natural warm-up.** Two or three questions switch heads into English in five minutes. It is one of our [20 ESL warm-up games with no prep](https://olyclass.com/blog/esl-warm-up-games/).

The simplest version is **this or that questions**: just two words ("cats or dogs?", "summer or winter?"). Start there with very young learners and move to full questions as they grow.

## Sentence frames by level

Write the frame on the board first: students who can see it speak more.

- **Pre-A1:** point or say the word ("Pizza!"), then "I like pizza." / "Me too!"
- **A1:** "I would rather fly." / "I like dogs. I don't like cats." / "Me too." / "Not me!"
- **A2:** "I'd rather swim like a fish because I love the sea." / "I don't agree. I'd rather fly because…"
- **B1:** "I'd rather live in a castle than in a tent, because…" / "That's a good point, but…" / "If I could talk to animals, I would ask my cat…"

A tip for older learners: after "would rather" the verb has no "to". "I'd rather fly", not "I'd rather to fly".

## How to run it in class

**Pick a side of the room.** Left wall for the first choice, right wall for the second. Walking there makes it a brain break too. Then ask two or three students on each side why.

**Hands up.** In a big class or a tight room, students stay seated and raise a hand for the left or the right choice.

**Mini whiteboards.** Students write A or B and hold it up at the same time, so nobody just copies a friend.

**Pair talk with a timer.** Give pairs 30 to 60 seconds to share their choice and reason. A countdown on the board, like the free [classroom timer](https://olyclass.com/classroom-tools/timer/), keeps everyone talking until the sound.

**Follow-up questions.** The real speaking starts after the choice: "Why?", "What would you do first?", "Who in your family would choose the other one?"

**Vote and count.** Count the hands together in English and say which side won.

## Would you rather on the class screen with Oly

With a projector, a TV or an interactive whiteboard, the free [Would you rather tool](https://olyclass.com/classroom-tools/would-you-rather/) does the board work for you, with no sign-up.

- **Two choices side by side, each with a picture** from Oly's own drawings, so young learners understand before they read.
- **More than 60 questions** for primary and lower secondary classes, in a new random order each time.
- **Next question** (or the space bar) shows the next one; a counter shows how many you have done.
- **Tap a card, or press the left or right arrow**, to mark the side your class chose.
- **Full screen** (or F) so the back row can read it.
- The questions stay in English in every language of Oly, because they are speaking practice for English class.

It sits with the other [free classroom tools](https://olyclass.com/classroom-tools/), such as the timer, a name picker wheel and a team maker. During an Oly game you can open the tools from the stage controls, so a quick would you rather break doesn't mean leaving the game.

## Keep the talking going

When the class is warm, carry on with a team speaking game: in [Picture Dice](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/picture-dice/) each team makes a sentence or a story from three pictures, and in [Hot Seat](https://olyclass.com/classroom-games/hot-seat/) one student guesses the word while the team describes it.
