Classroom noise meter

A noise meter for the class screen: colourful balls bounce higher as the room gets louder, and Oly tells everyone when it is too loud. Set the limit for the activity, and students learn to keep the noise down themselves.

Oly needs the microphone to hear how loud the room is.

How to use it

  1. Press Start and allow the microphone when the browser asks.
  2. Move the limit: low for silent reading, higher for group work.
  3. Leave it on the big screen. When the class goes over the limit, Oly calls it out and counts it.

Ways to use it in class

  • Silent reading or tests: set a low limit and let the balls keep the room calm.
  • Group work: a higher limit lets students talk, but not shout.
  • Make it a challenge: if the class is too loud fewer than three times in the lesson, they earn a game at the end.
  • Lining up and changing rooms: a quick check that everyone is ready and quiet.

Questions teachers ask

Does the noise meter record the class?

No. The sound is measured inside your browser, a few times a second, and thrown away. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent anywhere.

Why does the browser ask for the microphone?

The meter needs to hear how loud the room is. Your browser always asks before any site can use the microphone, and you can switch it off at any time.

The balls barely move. What can I do?

Raise the sensitivity, or check that the right microphone is chosen in the browser. Microphones in laptops and displays differ a lot.

Can I hear a sound when the class is too loud?

Yes. Switch on the alarm and a soft chime plays when the class goes over the limit (at most every few seconds).

Does it work on an interactive whiteboard?

Yes, on any display or laptop with a browser and a microphone.

Now play a game with your class

Oly turns any lesson into a team game on the same screen, with your phone as the remote. Free to start.
